The Carter Middle School goal is to educate all children with useable living skills. In an atmosphere of mutual respect, teachers, parents and students will work together to create an academic environment that is conducive to learning, while fostering social, mental, physical and emotional growth. |
GOAL I
Students will feel emotionally, intellectually and physically secure at school.
- A parent survey of grade eight students during the 1999-2000 school year indicated 91 % of students felt safe at school.
- Students are expected to be in attendance at school 95% of the time. In 1999-2000, 63% of CMS students met this goal. Fifty-four students received perfect attendance awards for the school year.
GOAL II
Improve parent, student, staff and community communication.
- The Homework Hotline informs parents and students about assignments and classroom activities.
- Monthly newsletters are mailed to the homes of CMS Students.
- A parent orientation program is held each spring for incoming fifth grade students. Eighth grade students and parents also benefit from a parent/student orientation at the high school.
GOAL III
Students will attain outcomes in all curricular areas.
- Students were recognized during the year for achievement in the area of academics, attendance, band competitions, Spelling Bees, Geography Bees, Book Bowl, and Academic Track.
- Certificates of Achievement are awarded by the state to students achieving satisfactory or proficient status on the
MEAP. During 1999-2000, 231 grade five, 191 grade seven, and 229 grade eight students received state
certificates.
- There were 233 students who maintained Honor Roll status throughout the year.
Fifteen CMS students qualified for the Midwest Talent Search.
- Our Carter Middle School seventh and eighth grade bands received high ratings in regional and state competition festivals.
GOAL IV
Carter Middle School will achieve accreditation status.
- CMS was awarded North Central Accreditation during the 1997-1998 school year.
- CMS has achieved interim accreditation from the State of Michigan.
GOAL V
Enhance and improve the teaching skills and content area knowledge of the
professional teaching staff.
- Staff members had the opportunity for professional development training/activities in the areas of Reading Across the Curriculum, teaming, MEAP preparation and Stress in the Workplace.
- The summer professional development programs allowed staff the opportunity to attend
in-service in the area of: computers, internet, Writing Across the Curriculum, math, science and social studies.
